Does Medicare Cover Cialis?

As men age, the chance that they will experience erectile dysfunction increases. Erectile dysfunction is a common occurrence in the United States, where there are approximately 12 million men in all age ranges who have experienced this condition to some degree.

When erectile dysfunction disrupts a man’s normal lifestyle, his doctor can prescribe drugs like Cialis. Cialis is the brand-name drug for the generic Tadalafil. These drugs are often prescribed for either erectile dysfunction or for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is more commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate.

It is important for men to have all the facts about their Medicare prescription drug coverage for Cialis.

How Medicare Can Help Pay for Cialis?
Original Medicare Part A and Part B do not include coverage for prescription medications, but Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage can help. Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) will help cover the costs of medications prescribed by your physician. If you have Original Medicare, you can enroll in a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP). If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage, your coverage will include the same benefits as Part A and Part B, but many plans include prescription drug coverage. Most drug plans will include coverage of Cialis for cases of BPH.

Which Medicare Part D plan you sign up for depends on the selection of plans that are available in your area. Each Medicare drug plan will have its own list of drugs that it covers. This list is called a formulary. Formularies and costs can differ between plans. Compare your options before enrolling to find the plan that meets your specific needs.

How Much Will You Pay for Cialis?
Most Medicare Part D plans do not cover Cialis for the purpose of erectile dysfunction, but it may cover the drug for BPH. Even if your prescription drug plan covers Cialis, you may have to pay a higher percentage of the cost because Medicare categorizes Cialis as a non-preferred brand-name, or specialty drug (a tier 3 drug). Your final price depends on your prescription drug plan provider.

Without insurance, Cialis costs approximately $150.00 for a 30-count package of 5mg tablets, and over $900.00 for 30 tablets of 10mg size. Check with your physician and your provider for more details. If it is not included in your plan’s coverage, you may be responsible for the entire cost of your prescription.
